Lady Triệu (226-248)

Lady Triệu was also called Triệu Âu, Triệu Trinh Nương, and Triệu Thị Trinh. She was born on October 2nd in Bính Ngọ year, the year of the Horse (226), in the mountainous area of Quân Yên, Cửu Chân District that is now Cẩm Trướng Village, Định Công Commune, Yên Định District, Thanh Hóa Province. Although being a woman, Triệu Thị Trinh was a military commander of mettle who had the vehement will to restore the country.

The revolt took place in 246-247 in the area of Nưa Mountain (in Kẻ Nưa – Cổ Định, Nông Cống District that is now Triệu Sơn District). Triệu Thị Trinh and her elder brother, Triệu Quốc Đạt, drafted a proclamation to expose the Wu invader’s crimes and call the people to rise up against the aggressors and save the country. As soon as the proclamation was spread and the revolt flag was unfurled, many people responded to the call. When Triệu Quốc Đạt died, she was elevated by the insurgent troops as commander-in-chief who claimed to be General Nhụy Kiều.

Although being a woman, Triệu Thị Trinh was a military commander of mettle who had the vehement will to restore the country. After a preparation time, Lady Triệu and her insurgent troops crossed Chu River to set up bases in the area of Nưa Mountain where is more than 30km from her hometown.

Triệu Thị Trinh and the soldiers consolidated the combat forces and tried their utmost to fight against the Wu army. However, due to a lack of soldiers and an inexperienced troops, the struggle only lasted half a year. In a decisive battle between the insurgent troops and the Wu army at the Bồ Điền base, Lady Triệu sold her life dearly on February 22nd, 248. Her date of death has become the date of the festival at the temple worshipping her. This temple is at the foot of Tùng Mountain.

Even though the revolt of Lady Triệu failed, it left a bright milestone in the history of our nation’s heroic resistances against foreign aggression. The tomb as well as the temple to Lady Triệu are now still preserved on the land where she was born.
