Đông Sơn Culture was the
peak of the Bronze Age and the early Iron Age in Việt , dating back from the fourth-the
third centuries BC to the second-the third centuries.
The archaeological
material about Đông Sơn Culture that has been collected so far is mainly bronze
artifacts (production tools, weapons, utensils, works of art including Đông Sơn
bronze drums – the most typical artefacts) and ancient documents, legends, and
annals. They help us to understand about various aspects of the society in the
period of Đông Sơn Culture, which also include the people’s costumes, dressing,
hair, and jewellry.
According to statues of
figures cast as decorations on hilts of daggers or swords and on handles of
ladles as well as make-up figures engraved on the surface and the body of
bronze drums or bronze jars, we could preliminarily identify the dressing of
people in the period of Đông Sơn Culture. The costume included hat, scarf,
clothes, necklaces, bracelets, anklets, and all kinds of earrings.
Đông Sơn people’s apparel
was generally neat and simple. Men often wore loincloths, stayed bare to the
waist, and went barefoot. Women wore brassières and skirts. Apart from daily
clothing, Đông Sơn people also created costumes for festivals, which were more
beautiful and more sophisticated such as different kinds of gowns, skirts made
from multicoloured bird feathers, or long loincloths embroidered with beautiful
and vivid motifs. Also, men held some kinds of weapons as adornment such as javelins
and spears that the handles were decorated with fringes.
Costumes for warriors and
military leaders in this period have been found only in the traces of fabric
adhered to bronze breastplates discovered in Thiệu Dương ancient tomb.
Jewellery is considered a
part of the costume. Đông Sơn people wore jewellry at their ears and around
their neck, hands, and feet. However, the most common ornaments were various
types of stone earrings and brass
bracelets. In that period, wearing jewellry was not only for beauty but also to
assert social status, power, and wealth.
Costumes in the period of
Đông Sơn Culture have still been so far retained in the apparel of some ethnic
minorities in the provinces of Northern and Central Việt .
