The discovery of pottery is a great
creation of mankind. In Đông Sơn Culture, the development of bronze casting
technique reached its peak and people started to practise the technique of
forging iron. In this period, pottery products, which were made in various shapes
with different styles, showed the successive progress of pottery drawn from
previous times.
The colours of pottery in the
period of Đông Sơn Culture changed through its stages. In the early stage of Đông
Sơn, pottery had pinkish colour. This is the colour of pottery made in the
phase of Quỳ Chử, which had influence on pottery in Đông Sơn Culture. Besides
this type, some vessels had chocolate colour. In Đông Sơn typical stage,
pottery was covered with a layer of ocher, which brought them bright red. The
application of ocher over the products before burning them in kilns is an
important feature of Đông Sơn pottery. In the late stage of Đông Sơn, pottery
was deep brown or black-grey. The mentioned colours became characteristics of
pottery in three scientific stages: pre-Đông Sơn, developed Đông Sơn, and late
Đông Sơn.
The material used to make pottery
bone was basically sandy clay. However, Đông Sơn potters added quite a lot of sand
and other organic impurities to create a mixture that helped avoiding deformation
when firing. It was this mixture that created black colour of Đông Sơn pottery bone.
Đông Sơn potters applied different
techniques to decorate pottery: drawing lines, brushing, imprinting, smashing,
pressing, and joining. In the area of Mã River, the common decorative pattern
on Đông Sơn pottery was the imprint of rope. It appeared on 50% of the total
amount of found decorated artifacts. Brushing pattern made up a small
proportion and virtually only appear on the shoulders of containers.
In the basin
of Mã River and ,
quantity as well as types of excavated pottery were particularly rich. A quite
large number of artifacts remained intact. Apart from the common artifacts such
as vessels, jars, pots, steamers, bowls, plumbs, leads used for fishing nets, printing
blocks etc., there were some other types of artifacts such as duck-shaped artifacts,
wine gourd-shaped bottles, and flat-bottomed pots. These are specific localized
products, which were only found in Đông Sơn pottery in the area of Mã River and
by far had not been seen in any other sites except Thanh Hóa.
